1. Heroes MMO

A free 2D side-scrolling MMORPG with five classes, quests, bosses and parties of up to 8. Its hook is the zip rope, which turns movement into a skill. It is in an alpha web playtest, so content is growing and stats can change. Play it here.

2. Pixel Odyssey

A 2D side-scrolling MMORPG made for the web, with nothing to install. It is on itch.io, so it is an easy one to try.

3. Mirage Online Classic

A free 2D MMORPG in a custom HTML5 engine. It looks from above rather than from the side, which gives it an old-school feel. Find it on itch.io.

4. Stein.world

A real-time browser MMORPG with a persistent 2D pixel fantasy world, quests, dungeons and crafting. Visit stein.world.

5. AdventureQuest Worlds

One of the long-running 2D fantasy MMORPGs, from the makers of AdventureQuest and DragonFable. Check aq.com for the current way to play.

Quick comparison

How to pick one

Want action and fast movement? Start with a side-scroller. Want a slower, classic feel? Go top-down. And if you came here from MapleStory, start with a side-scroller, it will feel familiar. Details on third-party games can change, so check their sites for the latest.
